Greece - Crete - Ierapetra August 2026
13th International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra & Awards
7th International Film Festival of Crete & Awards

Ierapetra, August 2026: The International Festivals of Ierapetra & Crete open pathways of Culture to the world
From cinema to music, from gastronomy to sustainable agricultural development, from the sea to archaeology and contemporary creation, the summer of 2026 becomes a journey of images, sounds, flavours, narratives and human encounters.
From August 1 to 21, 2026, the International Festivals of Ierapetra & Crete transform Ierapetra and Eastern Crete into a gateway of culture, openness and international radiance. For the 13th year, the “International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra & Awards” and the “Crete Film Academy & Awards” will take place; for the 7th year, the “International Film Festival of Crete & Awards”, the “International Music Festival” and the “Eastern Crete Gastronomy Festival”; and, for the 3rd year, the “International Sea Festival”. Together, these institutions compose a unified multidisciplinary event, where cinema, music, gastronomy, sustainable agricultural development, the sea, education, history, traditions and contemporary creation become an August pulse of culture.
Ierapetra, a historic geopolitical crossroads of the Mediterranean, has for centuries been a meeting place of cultures, people and routes. From this southernmost city of Europe, the “International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra & Awards” was born in 2014, founded by Eleni Vlassi as the first Festival of the institution, while in 2019 the “International Film Festival of Crete & Awards” blossomed on the same cultural horizon, opening the institution to fiction films and to significant Greek and international productions. Thus, Greek and international creators found a platform, hospitality and the opportunity to compete for the emblematic award, the “Goddess of the Serpents”.
Our Festivals carry the EFFE Quality Label — Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe — have been distinguished as a Gold Festival by FilmFreeway and participate in the most important international film festivals. A special honour is our third consecutive participation in the Cannes International Film Festival, at the Marché du Film, where we presented award-winning Greek films from our Festivals, promoting Greek creators and international trends.
The aim of our cultural diplomacy has been the creation of international networks, such as the Greek-Chinese partnership “China Dream”, the co-organization with the Greek Diaspora “Greek Icons”, the collaboration with “Best for Fest” of the Cannes Film Festival and the establishment of the “Network of Connected Festivals”.
Local development and tourism remain at the heart of our strategy. Valuable supporters are the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Crete, the Regional Unit of Lasithi, the Municipalities of Lasithi Prefecture, EKOME, ERT, CRETA TV, the University of Crete, the Hellenic Red Cross of Ierapetra, the Association of Hoteliers of Ierapetra & Southeastern Crete, Aegean Airlines and Minoan Lines.
In the thematic programme of 2026, the events will unfold at the Seafront Cultural Square, the Youth Centre, the Mosque of Ierapetra, the Open-Air Cinema at Mosque Square, the Minos Amphitheatre, the Venetian Fortress of Kales, the Church of Panagia Mesochoriani in Kavousi and selected venues throughout the Prefecture of Lasithi.
This year’s edition is dedicated to the Sea, the Mediterranean and the South Cretan Sea, highlighting Ierapetra as a place with deep Minoan roots and historical continuity from the Bronze Age to the powerful ancient Hierapytna; a timeless crossroads of cultures, sea routes and development prospects.
Starting this year, within the framework of the 7th Eastern Crete Gastronomy Festival, a permanent thematic section is introduced: “The Land of Tomorrow: Sustainable Agricultural Innovation”, dedicated to the agricultural world, farmers’ associations, local products, modern cultivation, the smart greenhouse and the circular economy. This section connects the land with gastronomy, production with innovation and the people of the countryside with the future of sustainable development.
With the Organizing Team and the Volunteer Groups “Ariadne’s Thread” and “Messonas”, the screenings and events will take place with free admission, equal access for people with disabilities and the participation of every social group, while they will also be broadcast online and via live streaming through the official Festival website www.festivalierapetra.gr.
At a time when international festivals are called upon to support cultural distinctiveness, social cohesion, openness and development, the International Festivals of Ierapetra & Crete invite the public to the great August celebration of Culture in Eastern Crete.
From here, from the South, we once again open a window to the world.
With honour,
Eleni Vlassi
