The film portrays the quest of a gay man to understand his difficult relationship with the “established masculinity”. In contrast, women have always been a model of strength, dignity and beauty. Following in his ancestors’ footsteps takes the protagonist from Canada back to Brazil and France. Guided by the contents of a found green tin case, he searches for an ideal example among his ancestors of “the man to be,” but he quickly realizes the answers are all coming from the feminine universe. Exploring his family’s stories and history is a way to express his love for all the women who surround him, especially his two (straight) moms and his trans-sister.
